Friends Helping Friends with Substance Abuse announced that they would hold a 5K WALK FOR HELP to raise funds for substance abuse education. The walk will take place on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Ingleside Park in Winthrop from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. and will feature entertainment by local musicians and artist, refreshments as well as informational tables for citizens to pick up material pertaining substance abuse. Entrance... fee for the walk is $25.00, which includes a tee shirt and a bottle of water. Organizers are also seeking personal and corporate sponsors.
The funds raised for this event will go towards educating the public, but more importantly children starting in the middle school age bracket. Friends Helping Friends with substance abuse was formed several months ago, and has held regular meetings at the Winthrop Senior Center for anyone currently dealing with the effects of substance abuse in their family and those just seeking more information. The group would like to expand its guest speaker program with the ultimate goal to raise enough funds to provide an on going drug and alcohol abuse program for the Winthrop Public Schools.
The cutbacks in federal, state and local funding has crippled the ability of government to provide the proper education and preventative programs to be taught in our schools and it is for this reason that Friends Helping Friends has organized this 5K WALK FOR HELP.
